Remembering GG

A couple of months ago Great Grandma Vaught, better known to us as "GG" passed away. There was no funeral for her, so I guess this is a way to speak about her life.

For a while it was too easy to remember and focus on the later part her life. Those were really sad days. Recently, the better parts of her life have come to mind.

I remember dancing with her at my wedding and listening to her say how proud she was of me. I remember a kid at heart, always looking for something fun to do, always enjoying life. I remember someone who could quote scripture, just as well as any pastor.

Towards the end of her life, Uncle Dave was reading her the gospel, when he came to Luke 4:23: "Do here in your hometown what we have heard that you did in Capernaum." When he got to the last word, he paused for a moment to pronounce Capernaum. But before he could get the word out of his mouth, she said it. Although she had a stroke and could hardly remember much of anything, she remembered Capernaum.

What a sign of how she not only memorized scripture in her mind but also in her heart. I think it also shows how we will all slow down someday, our bodies will become weak, our minds will be frail; but we will always have the holy spirit within us, guiding our lives and directing our paths.

What I will remember most about GG is that she wasn't afraid to tell everyone about the Lord. The waitress at the restaurant, the valet, the clerk at the store, everyone she came across was told of the good news of Jesus. And the older she got, the more people she told. I came across this passage that made me think of her:

But the godly will flourish like palm trees (like in California) and grow strong like the cedars of Lebanon. For they are transplanted to the LORD’s own house. They flourish in the courts of our God. Even in old age they will still produce fruit; they will remain vital and green. They will declare, “The LORD is just! He is my rock! There is no evil in him!” Psalm 92:12-15

Now that she has been transplanted to the Lord's own house, I rest assured that she is flourishing in the courts with God.
